"The 2015 Dress" Trick + A New Way to Partner with Me

Today, I have one throwback perspective to share and one parent coach opportunity you might want in on.
1. "Remember the Dress" During Arguments
Remember The Dress — the viral photo that some people swore was white and gold, and others swore was blue and black?
Turns out, both groups were right... depending on how their brains interpreted the lighting.
(We talked about this in a Boy Mom Academy meeting this week and some moms had never heard of it. If that’s you, check it out HERE.)
It’s a perfect metaphor for what happens during sibling fights ~ or anytime you’re arguing with your child. You see the same event, but from completely different angles. And when you both believe you're right, connection breaks down fast.
I've Turned This into a Parenting Tip:
STEP 1: Show your child The Dress! Pull it up on your phone and talk about what they see. Interview others together. What do they see?
STEP 2: The next time you don’t see eye to eye on something, say: “This is like the dress. It’s hard to see each other’s point of view. Let’s not argue about it.”
The Takeaway: When your child doesn't share your point of view, think of how hard it is to see the dress any other way. You don’t have to agree with your child (and siblings don’t have to agree with each other), but you do have to recognize that they’re seeing it differently — and their perception feels just as real to them as yours does to you.
Before you jump in to fix or referee, take a breath and ask:
“Is this like the dress situation?”
And if it is, name it. Then watch your child’s tension melt as he realizes you get how differently he sees the world.
